01The reference measurements
Every buck in a photo comes with a built-in tape measure. On a mature northern whitetail, the standard rules of thumb are:

Southern-body deer run a touch smaller; use the low end. These are averages, not gospel — which is fine, because photo scoring is an estimate by nature.
02Scoring by eye, measurement by measurement
Spread. Compare the inside of the main beams to the ear tips on an alert, head-up photo. Beams at the ear tips ≈ 15–16 inches inside. Two inches past the ears on each side adds four.
Main beams. On a side profile, follow the beam from base to tip. A beam that reaches the tip of the nose is pushing 24–26 inches — strong. One that quits above the eye is in the teens.
Tine length. Stack tines against the 7–8 inch ear. A G2 clearly taller than the ear is a real tine; brow tines get judged against the ~4-inch eye circumference.
Mass. Compare the beam's circumference to the eye. Bases visibly heavier than the eye's four inches are good mass; beams that stay thick through the third circumference separate a 130s deer from a 150s deer more often than tine length does.
Add it up. Gross typical score ≈ both main beams + all tine lengths + four mass measurements per side + inside spread. Run each against the references, total it, and accept that you're working in a range — a careful photo estimate lands within about 10–15% of a tape score, and that's plenty for a target list.
03Where photos mislead
- Head-on photos inflate spread and hide beam length. Quartering and side angles are where honest scores come from — never score a buck off one frame.
- Velvet adds mass. A July velvet buck can look 10–15 inches heavier than he'll tape in November. Judge frame and tine count in velvet; hold the mass verdict until he peels. (Timing on that in the summer trail camera guide.)
- Distance flattens everything. A buck 40 yards from the camera loses tine definition, and low-light IR photos exaggerate body size relative to antler. The best scoring photos are daylight, inside 20 yards, at deer height.
- One night is not an inventory. Score a buck across multiple photos and dates. The measurements stop moving after a few good angles; a single-frame score is a guess wearing a number.
