Straight answer: Louisiana's 2026-27 deer season dates have been approved by the Wildlife and Fisheries Commission but the final rule is not yet published — LDWF's public seasons page still shows the 2025-26 table as of July 1, 2026. The Commission adopted the 2026-27 Notice of Intent in January 2026, public comment closed in March, and the final rule is working through legislative oversight. The approved dates below are from LDWF's own Commission document, but treat them as near-final until they appear on the official seasons page.

Louisiana hunts by Deer Area (1-10), and the areas differ a lot — check your parish's area on LDWF's map before trusting any date.

Areas 5 and 9 alternate either-sex and bucks-only day blocks inside their firearms segments, and the CWD Control Area carries special velvet-archery segments — those details are exactly where a summary can get you in trouble, so read the final rule text for your area before hunting. Also approved for 2026-27: "bucks only" is redefined to include velvet bucks with antlers 3 inches or longer, and qualifying disabled hunters and veterans may use any legal weapon during primitive firearms seasons.

02For reference: last season (2025-26, confirmed)

Structure was identical, one weekend earlier in most areas — e.g., Area 1 ran archery Oct. 1 – Jan. 31, primitive Nov. 8-14 and Jan. 19-31, still-hunt firearms Nov. 15 – Dec. 5 and Jan. 5-18, dogs-allowed Dec. 6 – Jan. 4. Full table: LDWF seasons page.

Bag limits: 1 antlered and 1 antlerless per day; 6 per season, no more than 3 antlered or 4 antlerless (Area 4: 4/season; Area 10: 3/season).

03License basics

You need a Basic Hunting License plus the Deer License, which includes your deer tags. Tagging is mandatory for every hunter regardless of age or exemption: tag the deer immediately upon kill before moving it, then validate the harvest within 72 hours by phone, online, or text-to-tag.

05Plan the season

Louisiana's rut is wildly variable — Area 2 peaks in October-November while Area 1 river-bottom deer breed into late December and January. The area map is really a rut map:
