New York has not yet posted its official 2026-27 deer season dates — as of July 1, 2026, the DEC seasons page still lists the 2025 tables. But DEC publishes a standing season-date framework, and under it the Southern Zone regular (firearms) season would open Saturday, November 21, 2026. Here's what's confirmed, what's projected, and what to watch.

01Status: Pending — What DEC Has Published

The DEC deer and bear seasons page (accessed July 1, 2026) shows two things: the full 2025 season tables, and a "Future Big Game Hunting Seasons" framework that DEC says hunters can use to determine future dates. One more wrinkle for 2026: in March 2026 DEC announced proposed regulation changes to increase antlerless harvest, which could adjust early antlerless season areas. Until the official 2026 table posts, treat everything below the confirmed line as planning guidance, not gospel.

02Projected 2026-27 Dates (From DEC's Published Framework)

Applying DEC's own framework rules to the 2026 calendar — clearly labeled as projections until DEC posts the official table:

03For Reference: Last Season (2025) Confirmed Dates

From DEC's published 2025 table: Northern Zone bow Sept. 27 - Oct. 24, muzzleloading Oct. 18 - 24, regular season Oct. 25 - Dec. 7. Southern Zone bow Oct. 1 - Nov. 14, regular season Nov. 15 - Dec. 7, late bow/muzzleloader Dec. 8 - 16 and Dec. 26 - Jan. 1, early antlerless Sept. 13 - 21 in designated WMUs. Youth firearms was Oct. 11 - 13. Crossbows were legal during all bowhunting seasons.

04The Two-Zone System (Plus Two Exceptions)

New York splits at the Adirondack line. The Northern Zone (Adirondacks, Tug Hill, northern fringe) opens its regular season in late October and runs 44 days — a big-woods rifle hunt with the rut inside it. The Southern Zone (everything else, and where most of the harvest happens) runs a shorter late-November firearms season, so bowhunters get the prime rut window to themselves. Westchester and Suffolk are archery-only exceptions with their own long seasons. Your WMU determines antlerless eligibility, so check the WMU map before applying for Deer Management Permits (DMPs).

05License Basics

You'll need a NY hunting license, plus bowhunting privilege for the archery seasons and muzzleloading privilege for those seasons. DMPs (antlerless tags by WMU lottery) are applied for through October 1. New York requires completion of hunter education, and fluorescent orange/pink is required during firearms seasons. 06Check the Official Source

DEC typically finalizes and posts the coming season's table in late summer, alongside any adopted regulation changes. Before you book time off — and certainly before you hunt — verify at the official page: DEC Deer and Bear Hunting Seasons (accessed July 1, 2026).

07Plan the Season

While you wait for the official table:

  • The New York rut prediction for 2026 covers when seeking and chasing should peak — in the Southern Zone, the two weeks of bow season before the firearms opener are historically the best daylight movement of the year.
  • The New York solunar calendar rates every day by feeding-activity windows.
  • Hunting now? Best time to hunt today in New York has today's windows.
  • Trail Pro Intel's free Hunt Forecast merges weather, wind, and solunar data for your exact stand, whichever zone you hunt.

We'll update this guide the day DEC posts the official 2026-27 table and resolves the proposed antlerless changes.
