Maine's 2026-27 deer seasons are official: the firearms season runs November 2-28, with Maine Resident Only Day on Saturday, October 31. Regular archery runs October 3-30, expanded archery in designated areas runs September 12 through December 12, and muzzleloader runs November 30 through December 5 statewide, extending December 7-12 in southern and central Wildlife Management Districts. All dates below are from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's official season table.

Structural notes that matter in Maine specifically:

  • No Sunday hunting, statewide. Every season above excludes Sundays. That turns a 27-day firearms season into 23 huntable days — plan accordingly.
  • Resident Only Day is the true opener. Saturday, October 31 belongs to Maine residents (and qualifying nonresident landowners with 25+ open acres who complete the verification form). Nonresidents start Monday, November 2.
  • One buck per year, with a permit-based antlerless system. Hunters may take one antlered deer annually under the big game license. Additional or antlerless deer generally require an antlerless deer permit, allocated by WMD through MDIFW's summer lottery — and expanded archery zones carry their own permit structure with more liberal antlerless opportunity. Either-sex allowances in designated WMDs were still being finalized in spring rulemaking, so check the current permit map before assuming you can shoot a doe.

02Licenses and the Basics

You'll need a Maine big game hunting license; archery and muzzleloader seasons require their respective permits on top of it. The antlerless deer permit lottery runs in late summer — put a calendar reminder on it now, because odds and allocations vary widely by WMD. Details and applications live on MDIFW's deer hunting pages.

03Check the Official Source

Confirm every date and your WMD's antlerless status on the MDIFW season dates and bag limits page (accessed July 1, 2026) before you hunt. Rulemaking on either-sex WMDs finalizes after this post's publication date, and MDIFW's page is the only version that counts in the field.

04Plan the Season

Maine's firearms season spans the entire November rut, which is a luxury — and a trap, because not all 23 huntable days are equal. Tools to pick the right ones:

  • Maine Rut Prediction 2026 — our forecast for peak seeking and chasing in the big woods and the farm country, and which firearms-season weeks should be hottest.
  • Maine Solunar Calendar — moon-phase feeding windows for every legal hunting day.
  • Best Time to Hunt Today in Maine — free, live read on today's movement conditions.
  • Hunt Forecast — Trail Pro Intel's free Hunt Forecast blends wind, pressure, temperature and solunar data into one score for your exact stand location. With Sundays off the table, knowing which Saturdays are worth everything is half the battle in Maine.

From the September 12 expanded-archery opener to the December 12 muzzleloader close, Maine offers three full months of deer hunting. Sort your permits in the summer lottery, verify your WMD's rules, and save your best days for when the forecast and the rut agree.
