North Carolina's 2026-27 deer season opens with archery statewide on September 12, 2026, and every zone's season closes January 1, 2027. Gun season opens earliest in the east — October 17 in the Northeastern and Southeastern zones — and latest in the mountains, November 28 in the Western zone. These dates come from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission's published 2026-27 season-dates sheet (updated July 1, 2026); NCWRC labels it tentative until the Regulations Digest finalizes around August 1, so re-verify then.

WesternSept. 12 – Nov. 13Nov. 14 – Nov. 27Nov. 28 – Jan. 1

All dates 2026 except the Jan. 1, 2027 close. Antlerless seasons generally run "same as antlered," with important Western-zone exceptions: in Cherokee, Clay, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, and Transylvania counties, antlerless blackpowder is only Nov. 21-27 and antlerless gun is Nov. 28 only; in Graham County antlerless is limited to Nov. 21 (blackpowder) with no antlerless gun days.

New for 2026-27 — CWD special early season: hunters in the Northwestern CWD Management Area (Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes, Yadkin) and Southeastern CWD Management Area (Cumberland, Sampson) get a special early season August 22-23, 2026, any lawful weapon, as part of the state's chronic wasting disease response. Those CWD counties also follow their own zone tables (the Northwestern CWD counties run on the Central-zone calendar).

02Bag limits and key rules

  • Season limit: six deer — no more than 2 antlered, up to 4 antlerless.
  • Crossbows are legal archery equipment statewide.
  • Harvest registration is mandatory through NC's Big Game Harvest Reporting system — Go Outdoors North Carolina app, online, by phone, or at an agent — before moving the carcass beyond the rules' allowances.
  • CWD Management Area counties carry carcass-transport and testing rules; check them before hauling a deer across county lines.

03License basics

You need an NC hunting license plus the big-game hunting privilege (bundled into Sportsman and comprehensive licenses). Blackpowder and archery segments don't require separate permits — the big-game privilege covers all weapons seasons.

04Check the official source

Accessed July 1, 2026. The season sheet is official but labeled tentative until the Regulations Digest publishes (~Aug. 1) — confirm your county's zone there.

05Plan the season

The staggered gun openers exist because the rut sweeps west to east across the state — coastal deer breed in late October, mountain deer closer to late November:

Archery is ten weeks out. Late summer is for cameras and access routes — and for CWD-area hunters, an August 22 opener that's earlier than anything NC has offered before.
