North Carolina's 2026-27 deer season dates are final. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission's Regulations Digest has published, replacing the tentative season sheet that circulated earlier this summer — and the dates held. Archery opens statewide September 12, 2026, every zone closes January 1, 2027, and gun season opens earliest in the east (October 17 in the Northeastern and Southeastern zones) and latest in the mountains (November 28 in the Western zone).

One date is sooner than any of those: the CWD special early season opens August 22 — the earliest deer opener in North Carolina history, and it is days away.

012026-27 deer season dates by zone (NCWRC)

NortheasternSept. 12 – Oct. 2Oct. 3 – Oct. 16Oct. 17 – Jan. 1
SoutheasternSept. 12 – Oct. 2Oct. 3 – Oct. 16Oct. 17 – Jan. 1
CentralSept. 12 – Oct. 30Oct. 31 – Nov. 13Nov. 14 – Jan. 1
NorthwesternSept. 12 – Nov. 6Nov. 7 – Nov. 20Nov. 21 – Jan. 1
WesternSept. 12 – Nov. 13Nov. 14 – Nov. 27Nov. 28 – Jan. 1

All dates 2026 except the Jan. 1, 2027 close. Antlerless seasons generally run "same as antlered," with important Western-zone exceptions: in Cherokee, Clay, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, and Transylvania counties, antlerless blackpowder is only Nov. 21-27 and antlerless gun is Nov. 28 only; in Graham County antlerless is limited to Nov. 21 (blackpowder) with no antlerless gun days.

Youth days: September 26-27 and November 26-27, 2026.

Urban archery runs youth April 10-11, 2027 and statewide April 17 – May 15, 2027 — a separate late-spring season in participating municipalities, not part of the fall calendar.

02The CWD early season opens August 22

New for 2026-27, hunters in the Northwestern CWD Management Area (Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes, Yadkin) and the Southeastern CWD Management Area (Cumberland, Sampson) get a special early season August 22-23, 2026, any lawful weapon, as part of the state's chronic wasting disease response.

That is a two-day, late-August whitetail opener in a state where archery normally starts in mid-September — bucks in velvet on hard summer feeding patterns, before a single hunter has touched the woods. If you hold ground in those seven counties, this is the highest-odds 48 hours of your season and it is nearly here. Those CWD counties otherwise follow their own zone tables (the Northwestern CWD counties run on the Central-zone calendar).

Also note: the antlerless deer gun season was extended in Avery, Burke, Caldwell, Cleveland, Madison, Mitchell, Rutherford, Polk, and Yancey counties for 2026-27.

03Bag limits and key rules

  • Season limit: six deer — no more than 2 antlered, up to 4 antlerless.
  • Crossbows are legal archery equipment statewide.
  • Harvest registration is mandatory through NC's Big Game Harvest Reporting system — Go Outdoors North Carolina app, online, by phone, or at an agent — before moving the carcass beyond the rules' allowances.
  • CWD Management Area counties carry carcass-transport and testing rules; check them before hauling a deer across county lines. If you hunt the August 22-23 season, read those rules first — they are the reason the season exists.

04License basics

You need an NC hunting license plus the big-game hunting privilege (bundled into Sportsman and comprehensive licenses). Blackpowder and archery segments don't require separate permits — the big-game privilege covers all weapons seasons.

05Check the official source

The digest dates are final, but the Commission can adopt emergency rule changes at any point in the season, and the county layer moves year to year — CWD Management Area boundaries, the extended antlerless gun counties, and the Western-zone antlerless exceptions are all redrawn as the herd and the disease picture change. Confirm both your county's zone and that zone's dates before you hunt:

The NCWRC Regulations Digest is the source of record. If a date in it and a date here disagree, the digest governs and this post is out of date. A deer taken outside your zone's season is a citation, whatever the calendar on this page said.

06Plan the season

The staggered gun openers exist because the rut sweeps west to east across the state — coastal deer breed in late October, mountain deer closer to late November:

CWD-area hunters: your season opens August 22. Everyone else opens September 12. Either way the camera work should already be done — this is the stretch for hanging stands and cutting quiet access.
