Oregon Deer Season 2026-27: Dates, Units & What to Know
Oregon's 2026 deer seasons: western general rifle Oct. 3-Nov. 6 with OTC tags, western archery Aug. 29-Sept. 27, all eastern hunts controlled draw.
Here is the direct answer for 2026: western Oregon's general Any Legal Weapon deer season runs October 3 through November 6, and the general western archery season runs August 29 through September 27. Both are over-the-counter tags. Everything east of the Cascades is a different story — all eastern Oregon deer hunting, rifle and archery alike, is controlled (draw-only), and starting in 2026 those hunts are organized around new Deer Hunt Areas instead of the old wildlife management units.
Oregon is primarily a black-tailed and mule deer state. White-tailed deer factor in mainly in the northeast corner (Blue Mountains country), where whitetail opportunity comes through the controlled-hunt draw, and along the lower Columbia, where the Columbian white-tailed deer is protected and cannot be hunted. If whitetails are your target, plan on applying for eastern controlled hunts rather than counting on a general tag.
012026 Season Dates and Structure
From the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's official 2026 big game seasons page:
| Hunt | 2026 Dates | Tag Type |
|---|---|---|
| Western Oregon deer — Any Legal Weapon | Oct. 3-Nov. 6 | General (OTC); tag sale deadline Oct. 2 |
| Western Oregon deer — archery | Aug. 29-Sept. 27 | General (OTC); tag sale deadline Aug. 28 |
| Eastern Oregon deer — Any Legal Weapon | Varies by Deer Hunt Area | Controlled (draw only) |
| Eastern Oregon deer — archery | Varies by Deer Hunt Area | Controlled (draw only) |
Two structural notes that matter for 2026:
- New Deer Hunt Areas. Eastern Oregon deer hunts are now built around Deer Hunt Areas that reflect mule deer biology rather than the old WMU lines. If you have hunted the same unit for years, check the new boundaries on ODFW's interactive map before assuming your spot carries over.
- Late-season western archery. Some western Oregon late archery hunts exist beyond the Aug. 29-Sept. 27 general window, but they are controlled hunts — see the Big Game Regulations for specifics.
Day scores, the hourly read, and the trends that move them — the same engine, tied to your pin.
02Licenses, Tags, and the Draw
Every deer hunter needs an Oregon hunting license plus the appropriate deer tag. For western Oregon general seasons, buy the tag over the counter any time before the season starts — note the hard sale deadlines the day before each opener (Aug. 28 for archery, Oct. 2 for rifle).
For eastern Oregon and other limited-entry hunts, the controlled hunt application deadline is May 15 each year. The 2026 draw has already been decided, so if you missed it, your remaining options are leftover tags (when available), the western general seasons, or building preference points for 2027. Nonresidents follow the same draw with separate tag quotas.

Dates and structure above come from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's official seasons page at myodfw.com/big-game-hunting/seasons and the 2026 Oregon Big Game Regulations. 04Plan the Season
A five-week western rifle season sounds generous until you realize how much of it falls before blacktail and whitetail rut activity heats up. Put the odds in your favor:
- Time your hunts around our Oregon rut prediction for 2026 — the tail end of the western rifle season is when things get interesting.
- Check feeding and movement windows on the Oregon solunar calendar.
- Get today's movement outlook with the best time to hunt in Oregon.
- Run Trail Pro Intel's free Hunt Forecast for a daily hunt score built from weather, wind, pressure, and solunar data for your exact location.
Oregon rewards two kinds of hunters: the western hunter who grinds thick, wet blacktail cover through October, and the eastern hunter who plays the long draw game. Either way, the hunters who tag out are the ones treating scouting data and timing as seriously as the draw itself.
