South Dakota Deer Season 2026-27: Dates, Draw Deadlines & What to Know

South Dakota's 2026 deer seasons are set: the West River firearm season runs November 14-29, East River runs November 21 through December 6, Black Hills runs November 1-30, archery runs September 1, 2026 through January 1, 2027, and muzzleloader runs December 1 through January 1. These dates come from South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks' official key dates calendar.

02The Draw Is the Season Before the Season

South Dakota's firearm deer licenses are allocated by lottery, and the calendar is unforgiving. For 2026, applications for East River, West River, Black Hills, muzzleloader and Custer State Park deer ran June 3-23, with the deadline hitting at 8 a.m. Central on deadline day.

Most of the follow-up rounds are already gone. The Refuge, East River and West River second draws all closed July 17. Two things are still open as of August 16:

• West River Special Buck leftover licenses, third draw — deadline August 28, 8 a.m. Central. Nine resident licenses, hunt code WR111. This is the last scheduled draw deadline of the 2026 cycle, so if you want it, apply before August 28.
• East River Deer nonresident landowner-own-land licenses — first come, first served. Forty-nine nonresident licenses, limit one per hunter, available until they are gone.

Apply on GF&P's application page. Preference points are available if you're planning for 2027 instead.

Two more structural notes:

• East River vs. West River is the fundamental split. The Missouri River divides the state's two big firearm seasons, each with its own units, tag allocations and drawing. West River opens a week earlier (Nov. 14) and catches more rut activity; East River (Nov. 21) leans on post-rut and food-source patterns in ag country.
• License types and antlerless allocations change year to year. GF&P has been managing conservatively in recent seasons, and license descriptions (any deer vs. buck-only, antlerless availability by unit) are adjusted annually. Read the current license description for your unit rather than assuming last year's tag rules carry over.
