Washington Deer Season 2026-27: Dates, Units & What to Know
Washington's 2026 deer seasons: early archery opens Sept. 1, muzzleloader Sept. 26, modern firearm Oct. 17 statewide — from the WDFW pamphlet.
Washington's 2026 deer seasons are officially set. The short answer: early archery opens September 1, early muzzleloader runs September 26 to October 4, and the modern firearm general season opens statewide on October 17. Whitetail hunters in northeast Washington get a general season of October 17-30 in GMUs 101-124, plus a late buck season November 7-19 in GMUs 105-124 that lands squarely in the rut.
Washington splits deer hunting three ways — by species (white-tailed deer, mule deer, and black-tailed deer), by weapon (modern firearm, archery, muzzleloader), and by Game Management Unit. When you buy your deer tag you commit to one weapon type for the year, unless you draw a multi-season permit.
012026 Season Dates by Method
These are the general (over-the-counter) seasons from the official WDFW 2026 Big Game Hunting pamphlet. Exact dates and legal deer vary by GMU, so always confirm your unit before you hunt.
| Season | 2026 Dates | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Early archery | Sept. 1-25 | Most GMUs; a handful of units close Sept. 20-22 |
| High Buck Hunts | Sept. 15-25 | Wilderness areas and Lake Chelan Rec Area, 3-pt. min. |
| Early muzzleloader | Sept. 26-Oct. 4 | Statewide, unit-specific legal deer |
| Modern firearm — whitetail | Oct. 17-30 | GMUs 101-124 (northeast); Oct. 17-27 in most other eastern WT units |
| Modern firearm — mule deer | Oct. 17-27 | Eastern Washington, 3-pt. min. in most units |
| Modern firearm — blacktail | Oct. 17-Nov. 1 | Western Washington |
| Late modern firearm — whitetail | Nov. 7-19 | GMUs 105-124, any buck |
| Late archery | Mid-Nov.-Dec. 15 | Varies by unit; some blacktail units run Nov. 25-Dec. 31 |
| Late muzzleloader | Late Nov.-Dec. 8/15 | Varies by unit |
For whitetail hunters, the November 7-19 late buck season in the northeast corner is the marquee hunt — it covers peak rut in Region 1 whitetail country.
Day scores, the hourly read, and the trends that move them — the same engine, tied to your pin.
02Licenses and Tags
You need a valid big game hunting license that includes deer, plus a transport tag matched to your weapon choice: modern firearm, archery, or muzzleloader. Modern firearm tag holders may hunt with any legal equipment during modern seasons; archery and muzzleloader tags lock you to those seasons and methods. The bag limit is one deer per license year unless you hold a second-deer special permit.
Two things worth planning around:
- Multi-season tag. A limited number of multi-season deer permits are drawn each year and let you hunt every general season — archery, muzzleloader, and modern firearm.
- Special permits. Quality buck, antlerless, and youth permit hunts are drawn in the spring. Permit-only units (290, 329, 371, 485) require a draw to hunt deer at all.
Hunter orange or fluorescent pink is required for anyone hunting in an area with an open modern firearm deer or elk season. Also note Washington's carcass transport rules: whole carcasses cannot be brought in from out of state, and Region 1 (100-series GMUs) has in-state transport restrictions tied to CWD monitoring.

04Plan the Season
Dates tell you when you can hunt. The better question is when you should. Stack the odds:
- Time the rut with our Washington rut prediction for 2026 — critical for that November late buck window.
- Check moon phase and feeding windows on the Washington solunar calendar.
- See today's movement outlook with the best time to hunt in Washington.
- Get a daily score for your exact stand with Trail Pro Intel's free Hunt Forecast, which blends weather, wind, pressure trends, and solunar data into one call.
Washington's split-species, split-weapon structure rewards hunters who commit early. Pick your tag, learn one or two GMUs deeply, and let the data tell you which mornings are worth burning a vacation day on.
