Virginia has not yet published its official 2026-27 deer season dates — as of July 1, 2026, the DWR deer regulations page still shows the 2025-26 calendar. DWR typically rolls out the new digest in mid-to-late summer for the license year that began July 1. Here's last season's confirmed structure so you can rough out your fall, plus exactly where to watch for the official dates.

01Status: Pending

The authoritative page is DWR Deer Hunting Regulations and Seasons (accessed July 1, 2026). It currently carries the 2025-26 dates. Virginia sets hunting regulations on a multi-year cycle, so the overall season structure below is very likely to carry into 2026-27 with dates shifted to the 2026 calendar — but do not hunt on assumed dates. Wait for the official digest.

02For Reference: Last Season (2025-26) Confirmed Structure

All dates below are the published 2025-26 season, shown for reference only.

The pattern to remember: archery opens the first Saturday of October, early muzzleloader opens two weeks before firearms, and the firearms season has opened on the November Saturday two weekends before Thanksgiving in recent years. Expect the same rhythm in 2026 — confirmed dates only when DWR posts them.

03East vs. West of the Blue Ridge

Virginia's defining split runs along the Blue Ridge Mountains:

  • East of the Blue Ridge: bag limit of six deer per license year (max three antlered), generally long firearms seasons through early January, and liberal either-sex days. Hound hunting for deer is a living tradition in much of the east.
  • West of the Blue Ridge: bag limit of five deer (max two antlered), shorter firearms seasons in many counties, more restrictive either-sex days — and on National Forest land the rules tighten further. Antler point restrictions apply in Alleghany, Bath, Highland, and Rockbridge counties.

Layered on top: Earn a Buck in a growing list of counties (take a doe before your second buck), county-specific either-sex days, and separate tables for WMAs, state forests, and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest. In Virginia, your county — and which side of the Ridge it sits on — matters more than anything else.

04License Basics

Residents need a hunting license plus a deer/turkey license; archery and muzzleloader seasons each require their own additional license. Bonus antlerless permits are valid on private land and designated public lands. All deer must be checked within 48 hours via GoOutdoorsVA, phone, or a check station. Note two Virginia-specific rules: natural deer urine attractants are illegal statewide, and blaze color requirements apply during firearms and muzzleloader seasons.

05Check the Official Source

The 2026-27 digest is the only document to trust for dates: DWR Hunting & Trapping Regulations and the deer page linked above (accessed July 1, 2026). We'll update this guide as soon as the official 2026-27 dates post.

06Plan the Season

Structure your scouting now, confirm dates later:

  • The Virginia rut prediction for 2026 forecasts the seeking/chasing windows — in most of Virginia the rut peaks in mid-November, right as muzzleloader hands off to firearms.
  • The Virginia solunar calendar grades every day by feeding-activity windows.
  • Hunting soon? Best time to hunt today in Virginia shows today's best movement windows.
  • Trail Pro Intel's free Hunt Forecast combines wind, weather fronts, and solunar data for your exact stand — whether that's a Tidewater cutover or a National Forest ridge in the Alleghanies.

Virginia's framework rewards hunters who know their county cold. Use the summer to nail down which season set applies to your ground, and pounce when DWR posts the official 2026-27 calendar.
